A lifeguard found a boy unresponsive in a shallow pool at a New Jersey day camp on Monday afternoon, officials said.
"We are absolutely devastated and heartbroken," Andy Pritikin, owner of Liberty Lake Day Camp, said in a letter obtained by USA TODAY.
The camp is located in Bordentown, a city in Burlington County, about 9 miles from Trenton. It is described as a "transformative summer camp experience teaching children skills of life."
"Our thoughts at this most difficult time are with our camper's family, friends, and loved ones- and we are respecting their privacy at this time," Pitikin continued.

Staff removed the child from the water, called 911
The unidentified child was found during a swim period for the Freshman division, which is for young campers starting first and second grade.
The lifeguard and other staff removed the camper from the water to perform CPR and contacted law enforcement.
First responders transported the boy to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Pritikin emphasized that safety is the highest priority for staff members and camp attendees.
"We have three registered nurses on staff, 25 lifeguards certified in first aid/CPR/AED, and the Mansfield First Aid Squad located just down the street," Pritikin said. "Our goal is always to do everything possible to the best of our abilities to protect the campers and staff in our care."
Liberty Lake Day Camp is working with a licensed clinical social worker to counsel children if needed.
